UFC 249 – Finalmente ci siamo. Ecco l’intervista esclusiva a Smile’n Sam.

Vuoi raccontarci qualcosa riguardo all’esperienza nel reality The Ultimate Fighter?

(ride)

Buona fortuna Sam!

UFC 249 – FULL INTERVIEW IN ENGLISH

UFC 249 – Finally here we are, more than two months after the last event the UFC returns with one of the most spectacular cards ever, in a new atmosphere that makes you feel how risky this event is for the reputation of combat sports. Especially as far as health protocols are concerned, nothing like this has ever been seen in modern sport before. We felt it was our duty to interview an athlete who best represented this “premiere”, so why not the first ever to enter in the octagon this saturday? Everybody knows Sam Alvey, a veteran of the KO, who will take part in the first bout of the card against the dangerous Ryan Spann. Other than personal questions, we asked him to give us some information about the environment itself and the various safety regulations used. Here is the exclusive interview with Smile’n Sam.

In which part of USA do you live? How is the situation over there with this coronavirus crisis? How it affected your training?

I’m in southern California. Here not that many people are dying anymore but then they still got us pretty well locked down. It didn’t affect my training in any way I stay very active since December until now, a lot of the gyms are supposed to close down but I always found a place I could workout, not in private buildings.

What do you think about your last performance in the Octagon?

I disagree with the judges decision. But honestly it was a closer fight than it should have been. I needed to have done more but I just couldn’t do more. So, I made some mistakes but in my last camp here I’ve corrected it, I won’t be that passive ever again.

Can you tell us the story behind your nickname?

I don’t have a good story I’ve always been a free happy guy and I was young as a pro probably 5 and 1, or something like that, and we started thinking about it and I believe it was my dad that said Smile’n Sam first. I was probably 22 or 23 before I was called Smile’n Sam.

Do you want to tell us something about your TUF experience?

Yeah so, everyone thinks it’s really exciting to get on it but honestly once you’re on it’s kind of boring, because you don’t get to workout that much, you don’t have any TV and get sucked with 32 guys that only talk about fighting so it’s not that exciting! (laughs) I wish it was I don’t regret doing it, but it was really a boring six weeks.

Let’s talk about UFC 249. You’re already in Florida, can you tell how everything is set up there?

Me, all the other fighters and their staff arrived here in Florida on Wednesday. The UFC reserved an entire hotel just for us and our team. We have our own personal area where we can train, so is possible to be separated by the others. Right now I’m at the hotel and everything is set up just fine, pretty much as usual. Things are done in great safety.

Can you give us some details on what are the differences in security and healthcare measures between this event and the pre Covid-19 ones? What will be your daily routine in the next days?

They’re definitely keeping us more apart. As I said, training is only with your team. We were all medically examinated just after entering the secure area of the event, all members of each team were tested both serologically and by swab. We were given medical devices such as rubber gloves and n95 masks. Also, we don’t have any tasks that we normally had in the events before the coronavirus, for example we are not signing any UFC posters. My routine is much quieter than usual, I don’t exaggerate if I say I can manage my daily plan freely. I basically have nothing to do until 9 a.m. on Friday morning.

What do you think about Ryan Spann? Do you have a message for him?

Ryan Spann is a big guy, 6,5 feet and 81” reach. I supposed to fight Khalil Rountree so would have been significantly smaller than Ryan. He’s an athlete, he’s got a lot of strength, but I think he’s got enough weaknesses that I’m really able to capitalize.

This virus is literally creating confusion to everyone, even President Donald Trump suggested the possibility of an “injection” of disinfectant into a person infected with the coronavirus as a deterrent to the virus. What is your opinion about that?

Yeah, and he didn’t say anything like that. I know the quote, I listened to it a bunch of times and it’s just that the American media trying to make trump look bad. He didn’t say anything that you are supposed to just believe literally. He’s been on top of this issue from day one he’s been making most of, if not all, the right moves.

Thank you for your time, do you have a message for your Italian fans?

Hey, here Smile’n Sam! Tune in May 9 night, I’m gonna be the first full fight on the card so I’m gonna be the fight that everyone gets watch first. I’m gonna open the economy myself! (laughs)

The perception is that many things about the course are confidential and we still thank Sam Alvey for his willingness to clarify some very talked about points just three days before his bout which will certainly be a great forerunner for this fantastic card.

Good luck Sam!
