Cage Warriors, Paddy Pimblett a TuttoMMA: “Italiani, chiedo scusa. Passato un messaggio sbagliato”

A poche ore dal suo atteso match contro Decky Dalton a Cage Warriors 113 abbiamo scambiato due chiacchiere con Paddy “The Baddy” Pimblett, talentuoso 25enne MMA fighter di Liverpool. Abbiamo brevemente parlato del suo match ma soprattutto del suo recente e controverso Tweet sulla questione coronavirus, per capire meglio il suo punto di vista. Il ragazzo prodigio di Liverpool è stato estremamente cordiale e si è mostrato molto volenteroso a chiarire l’equivoco. Ecco a voi l’intervista esclusiva (a seguire quella in lingua originale).

Ciao Paddy, grazie per averci concesso questa intervista. Stasera sarai nella main card di questo evento molto atteso, Cage Warriors 113, contro Decky Dalton. Come ti senti? “Sto molto bene. Non vedo l’ora di entrare nella gabbia, è passato davvero troppo tempo dal mio ultimo incontro”.

Qualche anno fa, in un’altra intervista, hai detto che le trattative con la UFC non sono andate bene, pensi che qualcosa possa cambiare in un prossimo futuro? “Posso dirvi che la UFC vuole farmi firmare un contratto prima della fine del 2020”.

Questo potrebbe essere probabilmente l’ultimo evento di MMA per un bel po’, a causa di questa crisi unica e terribile causata dalla pandemia di Coronavirus. Anche la UFC ha interrotto i prossimi tre eventi. Cosa significa questo incontro per te? “Sarò onesto, pensavo di avere una maledizione addosso dopo quello che è successo nei miei ultimi combattimenti. Ora mi sento molto fortunato e sono grato a Cage Warriors per non aver cancellato l’evento di stasera”.

Parliamo di quello che è successo oggi. Molte persone, tra cui italiani, non hanno reagito bene al tuo recente post su Twitter. Vuoi spiegare meglio cosa volevi dire? “Beh, sono stato attaccato da un sacco di persone ma non ne capisco il motivo. In quello che ho scritto (su Twitter) non c’era nulla di cattivo. Intendevo dire che a voi (italiani) importa molto di più delle persone anziane, che molte volte vivono anche sotto il vostro stesso tetto. Qui nel mio paese gli anziani vivono da soli o nelle case di riposo, quindi hanno molta meno possibilità di prendere il virus: proprio perché ci sono meno ragazzi che vivono insieme a loro, che hanno una vita sociale molto più attiva”.  

Puoi darci i tuoi pensieri sull’emergenza covid-19 e su come sta influenzando la tua vita quotidiana e i tuoi allenamenti? “È folle, l’Inghilterra non è come l’Italia ma sta recuperando terreno. Ad esempio adesso la mia palestra è chiusa come lo sono tutte le scuole e le università. Tutto questo ha molto effetto sulle persone che ora sono in preda al panico e comprano di tutto come se il mondo stesse finendo. Davvero una follia!”

Ritieni che il governo del Regno Unito stia facendo un buon lavoro nella gestione di questa pericolosa situazione? “Non penso che abbiano amministrato la cosa particolarmente male, visto che per ora il problema è ancora contenuto. Ma non voglio sbilanciarmi, perché potrebbe andare molto male in poche settimane, solo il tempo potrà dirlo”.

In Italia ti assicuro che hai molti fan, hai un messaggio per loro? “Non intendevo offendere nessuno con quello che ho scritto. Chiedo scusa a chiunque si sia offeso. Non volevo proprio che passasse un messaggio sbagliato. Capisco che la gente mi è semplicemente saltata addosso, magari esagerando”.

“Spero che in Italia tutti siano al sicuro e l’intero paese si riprenda al più presto“.

Hello Paddy, thank you for your time. Tonight, you’ll competing in the highly anticipated bout against Decky Dalton. How are you feeling about it? “I can’t wait to get in there tonight been far too long”.

In a previous interview, you mentioned that UFC negotiations had not gone through. Do you think this is something could change in the near future? “I know the UFC want to sign me in be there before the end of 2020”.

This is likely to be the last MMA event in a while because of the Coronavirus Pandemic. UFC has also cancelled the next 3 events. In this bout particularly meaningful for you? “I’ll be honest I thought I was cursed after what’s happened with my last few fights. I just feel blessed and grateful to cage warriors for keeping the show on the road”.

Let’s talk about earlier today, some people, mostly Italians, haven’t received your recent Twitter post too well. Do you want to take this opportunity to discuss what you really wanted to say? “Well I’ve been jumped on by a lot of people and I don’t understand why in what I was saying is nothing bad. You care for your older generations at home where in my country older people live on their own and go into care, so they’re let as risk of catching it as there round less younger people who are always out an about”.

Please share your thoughts on the covid-19 emergency with us. How it is affecting your everyday life and training? “It’s crazy England isn’t like Italy but it’s catching up as my gym is now closed like all schools and universities. Just the effect it’s got on people who are panic buying like the world is ending. It’s just madness!”

Do you think that the UK government is doing a good job in terms of their response to this dangerous situation? “I don’t think they’ve done a particularly bad job as for now it’s still contained I don’t know tho as it cud be bad in a few weeks but only time will tell”.

I’m sure you are well aware you have many italian fans; do you have a take-home message for them? “I didn’t mean to offend anybody with what I said anyone who’s took offence I am sorry as it wasn’t meant to be like that. People just jumped on me over reacting”.

“Hope everybody in Italy stays safe and the whole country gets better as soon as possible“.
